5 DON’Ts on Promoting Your Business on a Social Networking Site

Most people use social networks like Facebook and MySpace to promote their business. However, some people just don’t have social etiquette. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Below are some helpful tips on what not to do for you and your business.

1. Don’t join a network and immediately post about your company and business. Why? Because nobody cares about you or your business. Why don’t they care? Because they don’t know you. Therefore, you will not get any responses (maybe some hate mail). The whole point of social networking is to SOCIALIZE. You must interact with others in order to get a response. After all, they want your opinion and feedback as well.

2. Don’t use anything else besides your real name. I don’t want to buy anything from “LilShorty1546” or “MovieLover47.” Besides, real names are better to remember.

3. Don’t post ads on other people’s wall or comment space. What makes you think it is ok to post your event or service on MY wall/comment space? My wall is for personal messages made just for me. Make me feel special otherwise, I will charge you for the ad space.

4. Don’t join more social networking sites than you can handle. You may have a page on Myspace, Facebook, Friendster, Hi5, Youtube, LinkedIn, WAYN, etc., but do you really go on ALL these sites on a weekly basis? I highly doubt it. Pick one core site and make that your priority. Don’t have more than 3 networking sites and visit those sites at least 3 times a week.

5. Don’t invite people to be your friends just so you can have a huge list. Did we go to high school together? Or meet at a convention? Do we share a common interest? Or have a mutual friend from the same industry? If the answer is no to all of these questions, then I doubt I will ever go to your page.

  1. All of this makes complete sense, Belkis. Personally I have so much time to do stuff, and if I have to have to spend a couple of hours a day updating five or ten social networking sites, I simply won’t get any of my actual work done.

  2. Great advice.
I only joined Facebook so I could keep in touch with family members who were using it which is great. The nice thing is that since joining I have met a bunch of good people, and hooked up with some good artists.
