Yesterday morning as I was sitting down and eating breakfast, I was reading New York City’s Metro newspaper. In the Careers & Health section I read about a new book called Art/Work: Everything You Need to Know (and Do) As You Pursue Your Art Career by Heather Darcy Bhandari and entertainment lawyer Jonathan Melber. This book educates the fellow artsy soul about “getting paid, consigning work, what to expect from studio visits with curators and things as basic as how to write a resume,” says Bhandari. She continues to say that in order, “to get your work shown you have to be professional and get it together…”
I couldn’t agree more. While I completely admire the passion of the creative mind, there are certain things that have to be done in order for their work to have the proper exposure. Sometimes one needs to step away from the free-spirited attitude and briefly get into the business mind.
The book provides information about paying your taxes, tracking your inventory, drafting an invoice, installing a show, designing your website along with forms, charts and sample agreements. Though I have not read the book, this definitely sounds like a must-have for all artists. Thanks guys for giving artists a helping hand.
If anyone has read the book, I would love to hear your thoughts or comments.
