Be Creative…But Not With Your Email

EmailDon’t you love going to a social event where people are interested in your work and they ask you for your contact information? You eagerly give them your business card and wait for them to call you. Do you ever wonder what they think? Well, believe it or not your contact information says a lot about you, especially your email address.

I have come across dozens and dozens of business cards and have seen many creative emails such as, “VampireLover 5467, Spiderman1981, SexxyKittn.” There are a few problems with this.

1) It tells a person that you are not serious about yourself. Clearly, you are more comfortable handing out an alter ego name you have given for yourself instead of using your real name.

2) Hard to remember. Sure your birthday is a date you will never forget but it means absolutely nothing to a person who may have to remember those random numbers in case they lose your card.

3) Unprofessional. “SexyLittleGirl69″ just doesn’t imply anything good.

4) Doesn’t tie with your business. It’s important to have your business in the email address so people can know immediately what line of work you do. If you have a domain name, use it on your email address instead of Yahoo or Gmail since anyone can have these accounts and you don’t want people to think you are just anyone.

5) Lazy. “Yes, but I’ve been having this email address for years and I don’t want to change it.” Then you don’t want business coming your way, right?

Have you changed your email address recently?

  • Belkis, I totally agree with this. Some years ago I was reviewing portfolios from some eager young art students and one of these bright young kids gave me his email contact, it was “fattony28@…”

After the kids left the room I informed their teacher that he really needed to let his students know how very unprofessional that email sounded. I too have a number of different email accounts, still, today, it is very easy to have multiple email addresses funnel into a single account so that you don’t have to check numerous accounts to pick up all you r mail.
