Women in Science and Comics!

The Smithsonian Channel is paying tribute to the wonderful women of science in the month of March by giving them their own comic book! How awesome is that?! 5 women have been turned to comic book heroines. They are:

  • Elisabeth Blackburn - biological researcher and winner of the  2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work on co-discovering telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes the telomere, a structure at the end of chromosomes that protects it
    Comic Book Title: Decoding Morality
  • JoGayle Howard - Theriogenologist (animal reproductive specialist)
    Comic Book Title: Ghost Cat
  • Nan Hauser – Whale Researcher
Comic Book Title: Footprints on the Water
  • Elisabeth Kalko – Tropical Scientist and Ecologist
Comic Book Title: Batwomen of Panama
  • Gundren Pflueger - Wolf Biologist
Comic Book Title: Running with Wolves

The 5 book series had a production team that consisted of Gerard Conte (illustrator), Mallory Murphy (writer) and Kevin Colden (colorist). In addition to the comic books, each lady has their own full episode about their work which will be airing on the Smithsonian Channel. Currently, you can watch the full episode of Decoding Immortality on the website.

Read the comic books online or download them from the Smithsonian Channel website.
